Darien Social

A Classic American Bar & Restaurant

By ~Rhontini~

A former colleague of mine who resides in Darien suggested that I give Darien Social a visit as a Martini Hunter destination. After checking out their website and inviting a few friends to meet up with me, I was good to go and experience what all the hype is about at this apparent hot spot in lower Fairfield County.

Located adjacent to the Darien train station, the establishment on this particular Thursday night was chock full of men fresh off the train from Wall St. (Dare I say? Well, we are talking about Darien!) We came in on the street side where the brick façade gives way to an urbane respite with exposed brick and wood paneled walls, cushy leather banquette seating and a large white granite bar with soft lighting to compliment the lush earth tones throughout. There were quite a few couples dining together, at least one that appeared to be on a first date. Other groups were guys doing “guys night out” as well as groups of women sharing one another’s company. In all, a nice mix of people in a welcoming space with a good vibe. According to its website “Darien Social brings back the classic American Bar and Restaurant from an era gone by”.

Lucky for us we were greeted with live music as we arrived, shared many hugs and then settled into a cozy round booth in a back corner of the front area with a great view of the hopping bar scene. Another separate dining room is located in the back of the house; it seats many and is less busy and noisy. The website states “the dining room walls are adorned with vintage black and white photography that depicts the carefree attitude of the 1920’s and the resolute of a nation during the prohibition years”.

After musing over the cocktail choices, this Martini Hunter ordered a Paloma. It was a refreshing blend of Cuervo traditional reposado, fresh lime juice and grapefruit soda with just the right lime essence for my taste. I have to say I was a bit skeptical about the concoction upon ordering but was quickly won over…this just could be a new summer drink for Rhontini! (I don’t drink soda yet have always had a soft spot for Fresca and this hit that spot with its sparkling grapefruiti-ness).

Drinks at Darien Social

If beer is more your liking, there are 31 beers on tap to choose from as well as specialty cocktails. Again lucky for us, we visited on a night when some vodka girls were on hand – handing out drink samples and free t-shirts! Bonus all the way around! Great drinks, delicious food and new clothing, who thought? Certainly, not us.

My friend Harry had scouted out the menu before we arrived and knew what he wanted. His pork spareribs were cooked perfectly and melted like butter in our mouths. The “small plate” was enough for two to share and the ribs had a delectable crust on them from the rub and chipotle glaze that made them all the more delicious. I am so surprised he was so willing to share yet happy to dig in! I ordered the wild mushroom pizza with hooligan cheese, chives and elderberry honey. Our waiter told us is was a best seller and it certainly was different and delectable. The pizza which was enough to share made a delicious dinner and breakfast the next day. The honey was a sweet touch that made this pizza almost a dessert. So very good and out of the ordinary. Other dishes we tried included the dry rub wings, Swedish meatballs, fish and chips and a burger. Needless to say we all went home satiated and happy with this new restaurant/bar find. We were all the more pleased to learn that Darien Social sources their food locally – utilizing a bounty of New England grown products.

Next time around, you will find Rhontini and friends relaxing in the outdoor courtyard area by the fire on a perfect summer evening. Cheers and thanks for a great night out in Fairfield County, CT! Darien Social we will be back again!- Rhontini
