A Bit of Barcelona in Danbury!

Meeting my friend Holly out for dinner one night, she gave me the options of either pizza or Tapas. To me this was a no-brainer – I love the variety offered at a Tapas restaurant – and she had been dying to try Mezón for some time.

The décor is a welcome balance of wood, brick, and subtle white walls, with paintings that make you feel like you are in an inviting café in Barcelona. They also offer outdoor seating behind white stucco walls infused with open brick. Although it was March, it was warm enough for this space to actually be in use.

Our server came over quickly after we arrived to take our drink order and share the evening’s specials. She was very perky and easy going – and shared a chuckle with us when we noted that we’d probably be pointing to our orders on the menu rather than try to pronounce them. The drink menu consists of a nice variety of Spanish and Latin American concoctions such as Sangrias, Mojitos, and Margaritas. The offerings of wines by the glass, as well as bottles, consist of several options from Spain, Portugal, Chili, and Argentina, to name a few. Since we were in a Tapas kind of mood, we chose a bottle of the Montebuena Crianza Rioja from Spain, which was very reasonably priced at $24.

The crowd on a Friday night was really a nice mixture of couples (young and mature), families, and groups of friends. An unusual, but welcome blend in what could be described as a “trendy” setting.

Although the restaurant offers full dinners, we opted to have a variety of the Tapas, or “small plates” for our dinner. The waitress was very helpful in offering the advice that if we were to order Tapas for dinner, that we order at least two per person, as they are truly small. The menu offers up a good variety from meats, to seafood, and even vegetarian fare.

The service was excellent by not only our waitress – it seems as though the entire staff is trained to keep an eye on all of the tables to ensure all patrons are well attended to. Not in a manner where you feel like they are hovering – but out of nowhere someone appears to take care of your every need. Our water was always kept filled, our wine glasses never got quite empty without someone coming by to top it off, and dishes were removed from the table not long after they were empty.

I had some concern about the fact that we ordered four dishes and our table was basically large enough to fit two plates, drinks, and a bread basket. But my fears were quickly eased when the tapas started to appear one at a time. The first one appeared, and the empty bread basket and oil dish was removed. This pattern continued as each course was served.

We started with Hongos Gorgonzola, consisting of mushrooms stuffed with gorgonzola in a walnut crust sitting atop a grape vinaigrette. Queso con Higos y Nueces arrived next – a mild goat cheese circling dried figs, guava and walnuts on toast rounds. We finished with lump crab cakes over a mango salsa, and finally shrimp and scallops in a tangy tomato/chili base nicely organized around a dollop of rice. Every dish consisted of a nicely balanced blend its ingredients and all were very tasty. I would also be remiss not to recommend the molten lava cake for dessert. It was well worth the calories!

Mezón was a truly enjoyable experience overall – friendly, efficient staff, great food, and a relaxing atmosphere. If I were to happen by on a night when there is a long wait, I wouldn’t hesitate to sit at the cozy bar and sit it out. – Sueloru
