The Rathskellar

A Hidden Gem

First you must actually find the Rathskeller before you can enjoy what it has to offer.  But once you do, it will soon be in your GPS favorites!

Now, although we’d heard about “The Rat”, as it’s affectionately known by the locals, quite some time ago we finally visited when a friend hosted a happy hour there a few months back.  Walking in, our first impression was of how intimate it was.   And also how packed!  We walked around the large U-shaped bar and found our group tucked away at the café tables at the far end.  While catching our breath, we took stock of the selection of bottles displayed pyramid style in the center of the bar.  Asking the bartender about the beer selection, Dave wasn’t too surprised when his favorite, Labatt Blue, wasn’t on the list.  Settling for a Corona, I ordered an Oatmeal Cookie Martini.  As our bartender, Chris, mixed my cocktail we found out he was the owner along with his wife, Janet.  My martini was poured and presented with a sprinkle of cinnamon.  Closing my eyes and taking that first sip, I found myself thinking about warm, spicy cookies.  Yum, it was a good one!  As Dave chatted with Chris, I took stock of the place.  Earthy colors, dark wood and an amazing array of eclectic, mismatched accessories made you feel like you had just walked into your favorite aunt’s house; cozy and comfortable.  (This worked really well with my Oatmeal Cookie martini, LOL!)  Leaning toward Dave, I whispered that we’re definitely coming back again.  He agreed then said that Chris would be ordering up Labatt for our next visit!  Ok, so how many bars do you know that would order a new beer for a new customer simply on our promise to return again? Yeah, not many, right?

As one hour turned into two and happy hour progressed, we chowed down the delicious Fried Calamari, topped with jalapenos and served with a made-from-scratch marinara sauce along with a huge plate of Texas Cheese Fries smothered in cheddar with bacon bits and a drizzle of ranch dressing.  Since that first visit we’ve enjoyed everything from Steak to Lobster Mac & Cheese, a hand-pressed Burger to my newest favorite the Crispy Captain’s Cod platter that I had on Friday night!  Four pieces of light, flaky melt in your mouth fish sitting atop a pile of sweet potato fries… delicious!

‘The Rat’ has very quickly become a local favorite of ours so give it a try and tell them Tammy and Dave, the Martini Hunters sent ya!

P.S.  As promised, Chris had Dave’s Labatt Blue chilled and ready for our next visit!
