Hotel at StillwaterAdirondack Heaven in the Wild

By MartiniHunter

Nestled on the shores of Stillwater Reservoir in the beautiful Adirondack Mountains is my little piece of heaven.  Thinking back to that first time I took off my snowmobile helmet and followed Dave inside, I was hooked; totally and completely hooked.  This haven of warmth not only warmed my body it eventually nurtured my soul.  Once inside, we headed to the bar (where else, right?) where we found Marion pouring drinks for all the other snowmobilers who had also stopped to warm up and have a bite and a brew.  Marion was serving drinks while keeping up with several running conversations from around the bar but still found time to welcome Dave by name.  She then laid eyes on me.  As Dave made introductions this little smile came over her face and I got a thorough once over.  She welcomed me to Stillwater and opened my beer (yes, I did say beer; it was a day of firsts, ok?)  As I took in the pine walls, rustic beams, antique wooden refrigerator and animal skins on the walls, Marion and I started a conversation about her, me, Stillwater, Dave, Joe (her husband and co-owner) and the thrills and dangers of riding the frozen waters outside.   Relaxing at a snowmobile trail bar is unlike any other; riders share trail information, tell stories, laugh, compare experiences, debate the merits of their favorite sleds and eat varying amounts of good food.  They also look out for one another like comrades about to conquer the unknown foe.  And did I say they tell stories?  Lots of stories!  🙂

Since that first visit, we’ve been back to Stillwater many times, in all seasons and my love affair with it grows stronger each time.   Remember that conversation I mentioned earlier?  Marion and I pick up right where we left off, just like old friends do.  What can be better than that?

Now a little about the place!  Established in 1894, Stillwater Hotel is located in one of the last pure, untouched places in the U.S. and offers a unique dining experience with hand-cut meats, fresh seafood and poultry.  They offer an array of beers, a full bar and a good selection of wines that can be enjoyed on the huge deck overlooking the water.  The hotel accommodations are usually in demand so call ahead for reservations.  We recommend that you take the time to get away from it all and relax in the wilderness of the Adirondacks; you’ll thank us when you get back!

If you go, be sure to tell Marion and Joe, “Hello” from us!
