Vacation is the perfect time to leave your watch behind and just enjoy the moment and that’s exactly what happened when I stopped in to the Beach House Restaurant.   This was the second stop on an afternoon of sea breezes, good food and even better martinis with my good friend and “Hunter-in-Training”, Judie.

Judie had introduced me to the Beach House several years ago and its appeal hasn’t lessened; it’s still a culinary diamond in the Shoreline area.   Arriving in time for Happy Hour (great timing, right?) we had the entire bar to ourselves and quite a bar it is!  The circa 1870 oak bar is probably one of the most impressive in Connecticut and had been relocated from New Orleans and installed in this building  which happens to be the old Villa Rosa trolley station.

To the right is the expansive open kitchen where Chef Nicci Tripp and his staff create mouthwatering delicacies that will have you begging for more.  A wall of wine completes this stunning and comfortable area.

As we settled into the very comfortable leather stools we discuss the merits of various potions with our barkeep Karen and General Manager Jeffrey Busk.  The extensive and creative cocktail list afforded many options and we finally decided on a couple of Cucumber Martinis which were quickly prepared by Karen.    They arrived at our fingertips and after a quick sip were pronounced refreshingly delicious! The cucumber vodka gave a hint a sweetness against the basil & fresh cucumber.

The menu provides many choices and we selected three small plates: Maine Lobster Gnocchi, a hand rolled ricotta pasta and lobster bordelaise, the Fried Green Tomatoes stuffed with shrimp and crab, garlic cream and red pepper coulis and finally the Crab and Avocado Sphere with lemon aioli, basil oil and a parmesan crisp.

We watched the preparations in the open kitchen and waited on their arrival.  We didn’t wait long, quickly took a few photos to share with our fans then dug in.  Outstanding!  Every generously portioned dish surpassed the last with a creative blend of fresh ingredients and flavors.  Our taste buds were partying like it was 1999!

Jeffrey was busy helping our fellow bar-goers but took a moment to surprise us with one of his Bloody Mary’s which featured a peppered vodka.  Jeffrey uses heirloom tomatoes, that are grown in the restaurant’s garden, in his home-made Bloody Mary mix.  They contrast nicely with the bite of the horseradish and heat of the tabasco sauce. Yummy!

If you’re looking for a beautiful place to take your best girl or simply wanting an inviting place to enjoy Happy Hour with friends, definitely make the drive to Milford and visit the Beach House.  You may even find us bellied up to the beautiful bar enjoying a new selection of small plates and martinis.  Cheers!
