The Olive Bar

A Gem in the Heart of Unionville

We’re big on the “go to” places when we just don’t want to cook or we’ve been riding mountain bikes all morning and nothing sounds better than a drink and a bite to eat.  The “O” Bar is one of those places. We find ourselves time and again falling back on this Unionville staple.  Connected to George’s Pizza & Restaurant and both sharing a kitchen; this area favorite is filled with neighborhood faces and new visitors who are all greeted warmly.  Evan, bartender extraordinaire, seems to be there every time we visit. We’re always happiest when there’s room at the bar as the conversation is always lively and everyone is included.

Alan’s decision always starts with which of the many beer varieties on tap he will start his visit.  Today it was the Lagunitas IPA.  My choice always depends on my mood… could be a craft brewed beer, a deep red wine or on some occasions, a creative cocktail.  After a terrible training run, the house cab was just the ticket on this rainy Sunday afternoon.  Multiple Mad March sporting events were playing on multiple screens behind the bar, all of which are lost on Alan and I, and our buddy Art provided the feedback on the whole belly clams… not the best day for them… oh well, next time.  So Cheeseburger Pizza complete with catsup and mustard for Alan and Broccoli Rabe with fennel for me… both so good!  The healthy and delicious dose of garlic in my dish kept me safe from vampires for a while, too!  Sitting next to Art, we were brought up to date on his upcoming move to Hartford and went over the list of bars and restaurants he would now have to consider his regular haunts.

For the Martini fan, the “O” Bar lives up to its logo… the list is extensive and all are expertly made.  For the food Hunter, we have yet to try something we wouldn’t order again.  The best part of the “O” Bar is the people we’ve met each and every time we walk through the door.  It will always be on our “go to” list and should you go too, we’ll most likely be at the bar… just look for the mud from the mountain bike trails on our legs. mtbgrl
